BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Potter Hits 55 to Drive Verdugo Hills to Stunning 93-87 Victory

Maurice Potter picked up three fouls in the first quarter and failed to play in the second quarter of the ninth-place game of the High Sierra tournament.

Potter, however, didn’t fail in the second half and picked up 42 of his 55 points as Verdugo Hills High defeated Rite of Passage (Nev.), 93-87, on Friday night.

The Dons (7-8) trailed at halftime, 52-34, but turned up the defensive intensity.

They mixed full-court pressure with a half-court trap, forced several Rite of Passage turnovers and scored 59 second-half points, several on easy baskets by Potter.

Jerson Castillo had 17 points and 13 assists for the Dons and Charlie Coronado added nine rebounds.

Camarillo 70, Agoura 69--Camarillo overcame a 42-26 halftime deficit to win the championship of the Ventura tournament. Nathan Kaup scored 19 points, Josh Hill added 14 and Leo Espelet had 11 for the Scorpions (9-2).

Brian Laibow scored 29 points to lead the Chargers, who blew a nine-point fourth-quarter lead.

Channel Islands 78, Westlake 62--Andres Garcia scored 24 points for the Raiders (9-2) in the third-place game of the Ventura tournament. Jason Gaines scored 16 points for Westlake (7-4).

Crespi 71, Buena 67--Brett Kearns scored 21 as Crespi (6-4) won the seventh-place game of the Ventura tournament. Ceneka Shaw led Buena (5-5) with 19 points.

St. Francis 82, Rancho Alamitos 61--Anthony Johnson had 27 points and 11 rebounds for the Knights (6-7) in a Brea tournament fifth-place semifinal.

Ventura 83, Saugus 71--Charles Dixon had 29 points for the Cougars (5-4) in the consolation final of the Ventura tournament. Major Sherrard had 23 points for Saugus (5-7).

Locke 80, Taft 46--Samoore Riley scored 20 points as Locke won the Eagle Rock tournament. Victor Purnell scored 12 points and Amir BarNetzer added nine points and 16 rebounds for Taft (4-6).

El Camino Real 64, Van Nuys 52--Cameron Henderson had 20 points and six assists for the Conquistadores in the consolation final of the Birmingham tournament. Jon Okuni scored 17 points and Kris Hurdle added 15 for Van Nuys.

Canyon 92, Mt. Miguel 46--Louis Moore had 16 points and eight other players scored at least eight for Canyon (7-5) in pool play of the Mt. Miguel tournament.

Village Christian 67, North Surrey 55--Aaron Kendrick had 18 points and seven rebounds, and Ryan Vivian added 14 points and four steals as Village Christian (6-6) won the Katella tournament consolation final.

Corona del Mar 71, Hoover 61--The Sea Kings made 32 free throws in the Estancia tournament semifinal. Mark Hull scored 24 points for Hoover (6-5).

MEN

Valley 80, Imperial Valley 73--Tomer Yachini scored 18 points and Vernon Simmons added 17 as the Monarchs (12-5) advanced to the consolation final of the Desert tournament.

Mike Farmer added nine points, nine assists and seven steals.

WOMEN

Valley 58, Harbor 57--Shawanda Hotchkiss had 27 points and 13 rebounds for the Monarchs (11-7) in a Fullerton tournament consolation semifinal.

GIRLS

Alemany 62, Mother McAuley 49--Kelli Kobayashi scored 23 points and Carly Funicello added 22 as the Indians won a consolation semifinal in the Pickerington (Ohio) tournament.

Kobayashi tied a tournament record with five three-pointers for Alemany (8-3), which plays Sequoyah (Ga.) in the consolation final today.

Buena 55, Atherton Sacred Heart 34--Christie Erickson scored 18 points and Nicole Greathouse added 14 for the Bulldogs in a semifinal game of the Archbishop Mitty tournament in San Jose.

Palmdale 54, Thousand Oaks 48--Kristi Rose scored 12 points and Casey Bledsoe added 11 as Palmdale came from behind in a semifinal game of the Thousand Oaks tournament.

The Falcons (12-2) rallied from a 13-point deficit by running off 11 consecutive points to open the fourth period. Palmdale outscored Thousand Oaks, 8-2, in the last 1:30.

Jenn Detmer scored 22 points for the Lancers (10-4), who made only one of seven shots in the fourth quarter.

Chino 43, Rio Mesa 29--Megan Bosserman was the high scorer for Rio Mesa (7-2) with seven points in a semifinal loss in the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Oxnard 68, Basic 37--Nicole Black had 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Jaline Bradley added 15 and four assists for the Yellowjackets (5-4) in a Thousand Oaks tournament consolation semifinal game.

Stockdale 77, Camarillo 53--Erin Tomlinson scored 19 points for the Mustangs in a consolation semifinal of the Thousand Oaks tournament. Melissa Bonds had 15 points for the Scorpions (2-9).

Channel Islands 31, Agoura 29--Junior forward Elanor Ecoffey scored 14 points and Alma Perez sank a free throw with six seconds left to secure the first victory of the season for Channel Islands (1-14) in a Thousand Oaks tournament consolation game.

Crescenta Valley 56, Santa Barbara 32--Amirah Leonard scored 21 points and made six steals while Michelle Greco added 12 and seven rebounds for the Falcons (13-1) in a Thousand Oaks tournament fifth-place semifinal.

Chatsworth 54, Bell 42--Nancy Vincent scored 18 points as Chatsworth (8-5) won a consolation game in the Fairfax tournament. Jody Borenstein added 12 points and seven assists.

Village Christian 66, Saguaro 46--Janna Largent scored all of her nine points in the third quarter when Village Christian (6-6) used a 15-0 spurt to turn a three-point halftime edge into a 41-23 advantage in the first 3:42 of the period.

Canyon 84, Blair 33--Tanya McLaughlin had 24 points in a semifinal game of the Bell-Jeff tournament.

Alissa McMurrin added 15 points for the Cowboys (5-10).
