NBA ROUNDUP : Hawkins Is Hot, SuperSonics Top Suns in Overtime, 123-112

Hersey Hawkins scored eight of his 35 points in overtime as the Seattle SuperSonics defeated the Phoenix Suns, 123-112, Saturday night for their fifth consecutive victory.

Gary Payton finished with 24 points and Shawn Kemp 17 for Pacific Division-leading Seattle, which won for the 11th time in its last 13 games.

Charles Barkley paced the Suns with 30 points but made only 11 of his 27 shots. He was ejected with 1:02 left in overtime after getting his second technical foul.

Phoenix, trailing, 90-80, with 10:12 remaining in regulation, took a 105-103 lead on Elliot Perry’s two free throws with 34.6 seconds left.

Kemp forced overtime by making both his foul shots with 27.6 seconds remaining.

Hawkins made a three-point basket with 1:49 left in overtime and added a three-point play 33 seconds later for a 115-107 lead.

Chicago 95, Atlanta 93--Luc Longley made two free throws with 20 seconds left as the Bulls blew a late 10-point lead but still managed to stay unbeaten at home.

Michael Jordan scored 33 points but almost threw away the game when his pass was stolen by Spud Webb for a layup that pulled Atlanta even at 93 with 35.1 seconds left.

But Scottie Pippen, who scored 26 points, found Longley under the basket. Longley was fouled by Andrew Lang and made his shots to give the Bulls their 15th home victory.

Cleveland 124, Portland 121--Bobby Phills scored a career-high 43 points, and Danny Ferry made critical three-point shots in each of two overtimes at Cleveland.

Ferry made a three-point basket at the buzzer ending the first overtime, tying it 114-114. He then capped a 7-2 Cleveland run at the start of the second extra period with another three-pointer that put the Cavaliers ahead, 121-116, with 2:44 to play.

Cleveland set an NBA record by shooting 40 three-pointers, making a team-record 15.

Houston 105, Dallas 102--Sam Cassell made a three-point shot from the left wing at the buzzer and Hakeem Olajuwon scored 35 points to lead the Rockets at Dallas.

The Mavericks rallied from a 14-point deficit in the final quarter, and George McCloud banked in an off-balance three-pointer with 2.2 seconds left to tie the score at 102-102 before Cassell won it. Cassell had 23 points for the Rockets, who won their third in a row.

Denver 108, Philadelphia 100--Jalen Rose made a three-point basket with 31.2 seconds left and then added four free throws, helping the Nuggets overcome foul trouble in Denver. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf and Bryant Stith led Denver with 22 points apiece.

Washington 96, Milwaukee 87--Tim Legler scored 19 points and Juwan Howard and Robert Pack had 15 apiece as the Bullets overcame the absence of two key players in Milwaukee to win their third consecutive game.

Two Washington starters sat out the game because of injuries: leading scorer Chris Webber, who strained his left shoulder the previous night against New York, and Calbert Cheaney, who has a sore right leg.

Detroit 102, Charlotte 100--Grant Hill scored five of his 28 points in overtime at Auburn Hills, Mich., as the Pistons recorded their sixth victory in seven games. Larry Johnson had 38 points, nine in overtime, to lead Charlotte.

San Antonio 122, Minnesota 84--Sean Elliott scored 33 points and made a career-high seven three-point shots to lead the Spurs at San Antonio. The Spurs, winners of eight of their last nine games, set club records by making 13 three-point shots in 24 shots.

Golden State 120, New Jersey 110--Chris Mullin came off the bench at East Rutherford, N.J., to score 25 points, and the Warriors held off a late Net rally to hand New Jersey its third consecutive loss.

Vancouver 103, Boston 95--Blue Edwards scored 26 points and Greg Anthony added 20 and 14 assists at Vancouver as the Grizzlies ended a four-game losing streak.

NBA Notes

Point guard Micheal Williams of the Minnesota Timberwolves probably will not play again this season because of a heel injury.
