Morningside 120, Beverly Hills 3: Score Says It All for Girls’ Game

Share

In the most lopsided high school basketball game in years, the Morningside High girls’ team defeated Beverly Hills, 120-3, in Ocean League competition Friday night at Morningside.

Morningside’s team total is the seventh highest in Southern Section history.

Beverly Hills also lost, 76-4, to Redondo last week.

Morningside, using a full-court press, held the Normans to one field goal in the first half and a free throw in the second.

Rod Tatum, Morningside coach, said it was not his intention to run up the score.

“I felt bad for the players and their coach,” Tatum said. “I used the game to play all my subs. I just wanted to get the game over.”

According to Beverly Hills Coach Tere Curl, she benched three of her starters for disciplinary reasons. She also said there was no reason for Morningside to stay in their press as long as they did.

“When teenagers’ self-esteem is involved, I think running the score up like that is highly unethical,” Curl said. “I hated to see that done to my kids.”
