Pacifica Remains Undefeated in Garden Grove League

Ryan Caraveo made three of four free throws in overtime as host Pacifica beat Garden Grove, 43-38, to move alone into first place in the Garden Grove League.

Pacifica (6-11, 3-0 in league) made 13 of 23 free throws in the game, including five of eight in overtime. Garden Grove (6-10, 2-1) was zero for two at the line in the game.

Caraveo finished with a game-high 18 points.

In other Garden Grove League boys’ games:

Bolsa Grande 51, Santiago 49--Duc Nguyen scored 26 points for host Bolsa Grande. Crispin Chavez had 17 for Bolsa Grande, which used its press to help open a 27-22 lead at the half.

Bolsa Grande (6-10, 1-2) lost each of its first two league games by two points. Santiago (7-7, 0-2) had two shots in the closing seconds to tie but missed each.

Rancho Alamitos 47, La Quinta 45--John Frank scored 17 points and Zeke Silverman had nine rebounds for Rancho Alamitos (5-11, 2-1). Rancho Alamitos led, 40-31, at the end of the third quarter and held on for the victory despite scoring only seven points in the fourth. Fang Li scored 16 points for La Quinta.

In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:

Pacifica 60, Garden Grove 45--Jaymee Pendergast scored 10 of her team’s 12 points in the first quarter and finished with 25 for host Pacifica (9-5, 3-0). The Mariners led, 12-9, after one quarter but increased the advantage to 35-23 at the half.

Bolsa Grande 46, Santiago 36--Jana James scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Bolsa Grande (7-6, 2-1). Teammate Jill Tantardini added eight points. Erica Pilkington scored 10 points for Santiago (0-2, 4-11).

Rancho Alamitos 49, La Quinta 23--Ha Nguyen scored 12 points and Araceli Hernandez nine for Rancho Alamitos (4-11, 2-1). Erin Neely led all scorers with 13, for La Quinta (2-9, 0-3).

In Garden Grove league boys’ soccer:

Santiago 6, Bolsa Grande 0--Albert Mendez scored three goals and assisted on three others to lead Santiago (11-1, 2-0), which is ranked fourth in Division III.

La Quinta 3, Rancho Alamitos 0--Donny Vargas scored twice for host La Quinta (7-4, 2-0).

In Garden Grove league girls’ soccer:

Pacifica 10, Garden Grove 0--Terri Emmons and Amanda Freed each scored three goals for Pacifica (7-4, 3-0).

Santiago 2, Bolsa Grande 0--Mara Rodriguez and Mariso Prado scored for Santiago (2-6, 1-1).
