Fountain Valley Survives a Late Surge by Edison

Fountain Valley was able to survive a fourth-quarter surge by Edison to win, 62-56, in Sunset League girls’ basketball Tuesday at Fountain Valley High.

Jennifer Ludwicki scored 20 points for third-ranked Fountain Valley (17-2, 2-0), which made eight of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter. Marie Philman scored 10 of her 24 points in the fourth quarter for sixth-ranked Edison, which got no closer than three points in the fourth quarter.

Kelly Boeke scored 13 points and Nicole Strange had 12 for Fountain Valley.

In another Sunset League game:

Marina 66, Huntington Beach 53--Ninth-ranked Marina (13-3, 1-1) broke a three-game losing streak behind Kirsten Cappel’s 19 points and 15 rebounds. Phouangmaly Pravongviengkham scored 14 for Huntington Beach (10-7, 0-2).

In the Century League:

Canyon 35, Santa Ana Valley 30--Canyon’s three freshman starters led the way for the Comanches (9-9, 1-1) as Meghan O’Neill scored 20 points, Stephanie Hillon had six points and 12 rebounds and Paulette Seamann grabbed 10 rebounds.


Foothill 37, El Modena 34--With six seconds left in the game Erica Hoernig hit two free throws to seal Foothill’s first victory over El Modena (4-11, 1-1) in three years. Teammate Rebekah Cole helped put the Knights ahead, hitting two three-pointers in the last five minutes, finishing with 10 points. Teammate Gabby Kuehn had nine points.

In the Empire League:

Loara 55, Kennedy 44--Freshman Anita Colon scored 17 points and her sister, sophomore Christina had 11 for Loara (10-3, 1-0). Christina had nine rebounds and six assists. Anita had seven rebounds. Noelani Westall scored 13 points for Kennedy (6-9, 0-1), which led 27-22 at the half. Loara rallied in the second half, outscoring Kennedy 33-17.

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 69, Tustin 32--Jennifer Tuiolosega scored 18 points for No. 10 Ocean View (10-6, 1-1), which led at halftime, 44-17. Shamekia Perkins scored 14 for Tustin (7-10, 0-2).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 94, Western 28--Rochelle Anthony had 18 points and eight rebounds as 12 players scored for fourth-ranked Brea Olinda (12-2, 1-0). Jennifer Saari recorded 15 points and eight assists. Stephanie Wettlin had 14 points, 11 rebounds and five steals.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 56, El Toro 45--Melissa Ford scored 15 points for visiting Corona del Mar (14-4, 1-1), which led, 43-30, after three quarters. Rachel Wondra scored 12 points for host El Toro (4-13, 0-2).

Woodbridge 58, Santa Margarita 15--Melanie Pearson scored 19 points to lead second-ranked Woodbridge (13-2, 2-0). Teammate Erin Stovall scored 18. Santa Margarita is 10-7, 1-1.

In the South Coast League:

Mater Dei 87, Trabuco Hills 40--Rhonda Gondrigner score 18 points for top-ranked Mater Dei (12-2, 2-0). Melody Peterson had 14 points and Charlene Mendoza had 12. Sarah Warnick led Trabuco Hills (8-7, 0-2) with 17 points.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 68, Los Alamitos 53--Lindsay Foss scored 25 points to lead seventh-ranked Esperanza (15-1, 2-0). Stacey Nichols scored 16 points for Los Alamitos (9-6, 0-2).
