RARE DRAFT: Local history buff Jim Gulbranson searched for 15 years, and finally found a rare draft of the landmark Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo between the United States and Mexico. His treasure, bought by a North Hollywood preservation group, will be at Sunday’s Campo de Cahuenga historical celebration. Gulbranson chanced on the document at a book show. “The pages are stitched together with needle and thread. They didn’t have stapler,” said Gulbranson.

But McCreary may not last out the ‘90s here: He’s thinking of retiring to Utah. His ancestors “would be very disturbed” if they saw the Valley now, he said.

GENDER-BLIND: Next month is Black History Month, and CSUN officials will celebrate by unveiling plans for a new institute: the W.E.B. du Bois-Fannie Lou Hamer Institute for African American Achievement. At first, says CSUN official William Watkins, the idea was to help black men. But that was quickly dropped. Hence Hamer’s name in the moniker.
