Detroit Overcomes Charlotte Problem

Detroit won at Charlotte for the first time in nearly four years Thursday night as Grant Hill scored 20 of his 21 points in the final 18 1/2 minutes to rally the Pistons to a 95-93 victory over the Hornets.

Hill, who made his final nine field-goal attempts, added 12 rebounds and seven assists as the Pistons won at the Charlotte Coliseum for the first time in nine tries since Jan. 28, 1992.

Allan Houston had 26 points for Detroit, which got its ninth victory in 12 games.

Phoenix 111, Golden State 106--A.C. Green had 17 points and 10 rebounds while playing 47 1/2 minutes as the injury-depleted Suns ended a four-game losing streak.

Wesley Person had 18 points for the Suns, who dressed only eight players for the second consecutive game. Charles Barkley did not play for the second consecutive night because of a sore toe.

Indiana 96, Milwaukee 88--Reggie Miller scored 20 of his 24 points in the second half as the Pacers won at Indianapolis.

Dale Davis added 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Atlanta 87, Toronto 79--Mookie Blaylock scored 24 points as the Hawks held the Raptors to their lowest offensive output of the season at Toronto. The Raptors’ previous low score came in a 94-82 loss to the Detroit Pistons.

NBA Notes

The Houston Rockets have extended Coach Rudy Tomjanovich’s contract through 2000, KRIV-TV reported. Financial terms were not disclosed. . . . An MRI test on Rocket forward Robert Horry’s sore right knee was negative, the team said. Horry, however, is questionable for tonight’s game against the Lakers. . . . Dallas Maverick center Lorenzo Williams will undergo eye surgery next week and will be sidelined for three to four weeks, the team announced. Williams suffered a broken right orbit bone in Tuesday’s loss to Indiana when he was elbowed by the Pacers’ Rik Smits.
