Trinidad and Tobago Team Won’t Remember Gold Cup Trip Fondly

Trinidad and Tobago lost its soccer match with the United States at the Gold Cup on Saturday, then discovered it had been robbed.

By departure time Monday, the team couldn’t wait to lose its memories of Southern California.

“It’s been horrible,” manager Richard Abraham said.

The 25-member team was left waiting at Anaheim Stadium for a bus that never arrived after its 3-2 loss to the host team.

Driven by fans to their Fullerton motel, the players found they had been robbed. More than $50,000 in cash and jewelry was missing from their rooms, including $20,000 in expense money, team officials said.

“Some of it was locked in my safe in my room,” Abraham said. “We lost all our stipend--more than $20,000.”

Fullerton police Sgt. Gary Miller said detectives were investigating the theft.

The bus no-show resulted from a mixup after the team’s original bus broke down, a tournament spokesman said.
