South Bay : City May Take Over Naval Housing

Share

Harbor-area communities may soon take over naval housing projects that no longer will be needed by the government after the closure of the Long Beach Naval Shipyard.

The White Point naval housing project, San Pedro housing project and Palos Verdes housing project are expected to be named surplus by the federal government within three weeks, according to a spokesman for harbor district Councilman Rudy Svorinich. When that happens, harbor district officials will begin planning how to use the land.

The Air Force has applied to use the 78-unit White Point housing project, which is across the street from other Air Force units in San Pedro.

To help determine how to use the other two properties, Svorinich will select area residents to serve on a committee that will analyze options. The Los Angeles City Council will make the final decision about the housing.

“This could be a real positive for the Harbor City-San Pedro area,” said Barry Glickman, Svorinich’s chief of staff. “These two areas are pretty much self-contained and they offer some very inviting opportunities.”
