Oxnard Leads in Channel, 68-61

Oxnard High took over first place in the Channel League on Wednesday night by turning back Ventura, 68-61, at Oxnard.

The Yellowjackets (8-7, 5-1) trailed, 37-31, but outscored Ventura, 37-24, in the last two quarters.

Oxnard made eight of 10 free throws in fourth quarter and capitalized on a fatiguing Cougar defense.

Charles Erving scored 15 points for Oxnard.

The Cougars were playing without top scorers Donte Lincoln and Charles Dixon, who sat out for disciplinary reasons.

Ryan Preiss scored 22 points for Ventura (9-6, 4-2).

Harvard-Westlake 68, Chaminade 46--Jarron Collins scored 25 points and added 15 rebounds for the Wolverines (16-2, 6-0) in a Mission League game at Harvard.

Leonardo DaCosta had 16 points and six steals and Rico Cabrera added 16 points.

Chaminade (9-10, 3-2) outscored Harvard, 16-12, in the first quarter but quickly fell behind, scoring only 12 points in the second half.

Jason Collins did not play for Harvard because of the flu.

Agoura 70, Westlake 58--Brian Laibow had 20 points for the Chargers (11-5, 5-2) in their fifth consecutive Marmonte League victory.

Thousand Oaks 66, Newbury Park 49--Mike Lauer scored 18 points for the Lancers (9-6, 3-2) in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Channel Islands 65, Camarillo 60--Charles Merricks had 18 points, Barnabe Simon added 16 and Andres Garcia had 15 for the Raiders (11-5, 4-3) in a Marmonte League victory.

Montclair Prep 72, Oak Park 58--Anwawn Jones scored 25 points and had 17 rebounds as the Mounties used a big fourth quarter to pull away from the Eagles in a nonleague game at Montclair Prep.

San Marcos 84, Hueneme 50--Kevin Armstrong had 20 points for the Royals (6-10, 2-4) in a Channel League game at Hueneme.

Bell-Jeff 46, La Salle 44--Elihu Cobb’s layup with six seconds left gave the Guards a Santa Fe League victory at La Salle.

La Canada 71, South Pasadena 54--Danny Bush had six three-pointers and 30 points for the Spartans (16-4, 4-0) in a Rio Hondo League game.

Burbank 58, Hart 50--Juni Williams scored 18 points and Don Allado added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs (9-9, 2-2), who didn’t trail in a Foothill League game at Valencia.

Cleveland 68, San Fernando 55--Donald Holt had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Cavaliers (9-7, 3-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Nordhoff 71, Santa Paula 20--Erin Barker scored 22 points for the Rangers (12-7, 3-1) in a Frontier League game at Santa Paula.
