Seahawks Talk With Anaheim

The Seattle Seahawks, who appear poised to break their Kingdome lease, have had serious discussions with city officials about moving the team to Anaheim.

“Nothing’s been consummated yet,” said Jim Ruth, Anaheim City Manager. “We’re going to have to wait another day or two. A lot of problems have to be worked out and until Mr. [Ken] Behring says anything it’s very much in the air.”

Anaheim Mayor Tom Daly, reached at his home Wednesday night, declined comment, saying he was “in the middle of something.”

Seattle Owner Ken Behring has notified King County supervisors that he would like to have a meeting with them today to discuss the Seahawks’ situation. There are reports Behring may be prepared to file a suit against King County to break the team’s lease and move elsewhere in time for the 1996 season.

The Seahawks’ lease to the Kingdome runs through the year 2005, but the team believes the Kingdome is no longer a first-class facility, thereby giving them grounds for an immediate out in their lease.

A television station in Seattle reported Wednesday night that unidentified staffers within the Seahawk organization have been told the team is moving to Anaheim and that the Walt Disney Co. will be building the team a new stadium.

Ruth said the city of Anaheim has had talks with Behring, but there are hurdles to overcome.
