Wilkins’ Shot Beats Stanford

From Staff and Wire Reports

Kenya Wilkins, who had been shooting 30% in Pacific 10 games, capped a 30-point outburst by making an 18-foot shot at the buzzer that gave Oregon a 64-62 victory over No. 20 Stanford Saturday at Eugene, Ore.

Stanford, 16-6 overall and 9-4 in conference, had its winning streak stopped at six and now trails Pac-10 leader UCLA by two games. Oregon has won four of its last five to improve to 13-11, 6-7.

After Stanford guard Dion Cross, a 94% free-throw shooter, made two with seven seconds left to tie the game, 62-62, Wilkins took the inbounds pass, dribbled down the court and was gradually forced to his left by point guard counterpart Brevin Knight. Wilkins started an off-balance shot with three seconds that he had to adjust in mid-air as Knight flew by him. Wilkins somehow managed to get enough touch on the shot to make it.
