City to Fund Its Share of Emergency System

Backing the purchase of an 800-megahertz radio system for police, fire and public works departments countywide, the City Council has agreed to pay $1.2 million as its share of the $80-million project.

The new communications system, which would link all police, fire and public works agencies to one network, is considered crucial to coordinating emergency responses. It would replace an aging radio network.

City and county officials have spent the past year working out a cost-sharing plan under which the county will pick up 39% of the project’s tab. The cities are to contribute a total of about $50 million.

City Manager Jerry L. Bankston said La Habra has $623,861 in a trust fund that has earned $28,080 in interest. He said the money will be used for the new communications system.

Police Chief Steven Staveley said he expects the system to be in full operation and “absolutely perfect” by late 1999.
