Long Beach State Routs Washington State

Long Beach State increased its winning streak to six games with a 19-0 victory over Washington State on Sunday at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Kevin Moore had two doubles and drove in four runs for Long Beach (8-5). J.J. Newkirk had two hits and three runs batted in and Casey Snow had a double and two RBIs.

Six other players each drove in a run for Long Beach, which scored nine times in the third to take a 12-0 lead. The 49ers also scored seven runs in the seventh.

Marcus Jones (3-0) gave up five hits and struck out five in seven innings for the victory.

In a Big West Conference women’s basketball game:

San Jose State 61, UC Irvine 57--Kari Steele had 18 points, including five in a row to break a 51-51 tie late in the game, for host San Jose State (8-17, 3-13). The Spartans stopped a five-game losing streak.

The loss dropped UC Irvine (10-15, 5-11) into a tie for sixth with Nevada. Only the top six teams advance to the conference tournament. Nevada is at UC Irvine at 7 p.m. Thursday.
