Ever since Thomas Muster became No. 1 in the world a few weeks ago, life on the tennis tour has become fairly rank for the hard-hitting Austrian.

Monday, the top-seeded Muster was upset by Italy’s Andrea Gaudenzi in the Italian Indoor ATP tournament, 6-3, 6-4, in Milan. The defeat marked the second consecutive first-round loss for Muster, who hasn’t won since being named No. 1. Pete Sampras is now No. 1.

Gaudenzi, 22, is ranked 35th and unseeded in the tournament.

Billie Jean King, U.S. Fed Cup captain, said the United States would balk at playing in Germany with Monica Seles on the team if those nations advanced to the semifinals this summer.

Seles, sidelined for more than two years after being stabbed during a 1993 match in Hamburg, has vowed never to play again in Germany. Her attacker has never served jail time for the crime.
