Calvary Chapel Set for Run at State Title
- Share via
Santa Ana Calvary Chapel will try for its third state wrestling championship in four years beginning today at the University of the Pacific’s Spanos Center in Stockton.
With seven wrestlers who qualified from the Masters tournament last week--the most from any Southern Section school--the Eagles hope to outlast top contenders in defending champion San Jose Independence and Poway.
Poway and Independence have nine wrestlers each in the state meet.
Calvary Chapel won titles in 1993 and ’94. Last season, the Eagles were defeated by San Jose Independence, 113.5-106.5.
Other top schools expected to do well include Union City James Logan and Bakersfield. In the City Section, Bell led all teams with five qualifiers.
Competition concludes Saturday, with the championship finals scheduled for 7 p.m.
