Barber’s No-Hitter Finishes CLU Sweep

Senior Andrew Barber pitched his second career no-hitter for Cal Lutheran to lead the Kingsmen to a 9-0 victory over Whittier College in the second game of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at Cal Lutheran.

The Kingsmen (12-3-1, 9-0 in conference play) squeaked by Whittier, 3-2, in the first game.

Barber (2-1), a right-hander from Loveland, Colo., struck out 11 and walked two.

Cal Lutheran’s Robert Nichols was four for five with a double, two home runs, three runs batted in and four runs scored in the second game.

Canyons 8, Mission 7--Rick Nadeau tripled with one out in the bottom of the eighth and scored the game-winning run on Jeff Brown’s sacrifice fly in a Western State Conference South Division game at Canyons.

Casey Canale’s two-out, three-run double gave Canyons a 4-0 lead in the second and the Cougars (5-8, 2-0) extended their advantage to 7-0 in the third.

Valley 8, Pierce 1--Taiki Yamaoka struck out 12 and walked one for the Monarchs (5-9, 2-0) in the WSC South Division game at Valley. Yamaoka (2-3) got help from the Valley defense, which turned three double plays.

Ventura 16, Hancock 15--Jason Kimble had four hits and three RBIs and scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the 10th inning, leading the Pirates (7-4, 2-0) in a WSC North Division game. Chris Carr also had four hits for Ventura.

Pepperdine 5, Loyola Marymount 1--Dennis Twombley homered and drove in two runs to lead the Waves (9-9, 2-0) in a West Coast Conference game at Pepperdine.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 87, Holy Names 67--Mike Penberthy scored 23 points and James Mosley had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Mustangs in the first round of the NAIA Far West Region Independents tournament at Master’s.

The Mustangs (26-6) will play host to Dominican at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to determine the conference’s automatic berth in the NAIA championships.

SOFTBALL

Indiana 3, Cal State Northridge 0--The Matadors were held to two hits in a Leadoff Classic tournament game at Columbus, Ga.
