Rancho Santiago Beats Top-Ranked Palomar in Softball

Pitcher Sheryl Anderson helped Rancho Santiago upset Palomar, the top-ranked team in the state, 4-1, in the first round of the Golden West softball invitational Friday at Golden West.
Anderson (11-3-1) pitched six innings, giving up five hits for the Dons (13-11-1). Carol Andraus had two doubles for the Dons, who scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Palomar is 18-4-1. Rancho Santiago also beat Mt. San Antonio, 2-1, Friday.
In another tournament game:
Solano 8, Golden West 2 (5 innings, time limit)--Solano scored two runs in each of the first four innings to knock Golden West (6-3) into the consolation bracket. Golden West took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Solano took advantage of six Rustler errors.
In nonconference golf:
Cypress 387, Mt. San Jacinto 403--Gary Calas shot three-under-par 69 to lead Cypress over Mt. San Jacinto at Seven Hills in Hemet.
In Orange Empire Conference men’s volleyball:
El Camino 3, Irvine Valley 2--Rob Spencer had 18 kills for El Camino (4-3, 4-3). Zack Humphrey had 20 kills and Beau Bianchi had 18 for Irvine Valley (1-6, 1-6).
Orange Coast 3, Mt. San Antonio 0--Troy Langley had 13 kills and Phil Schildts had 10 for Orange Coast (9-1, 6-1).
Golden West 3, Santa Monica 0--Curtis Jackson had 20 kills to lead Golden West (6-2, 5-2). Jeff Carlucci had 17 kills, nine digs and five blocks and Greg Logan had 47 assists for the Rustlers.
In Orange Empire Conference men’s track and field:
Riverside 82.5, Saddleback 64.5, Orange Coast 33--Saddleback freshman Rafael Jackson won the triple jump (43 feet 0) and javelin (172-0).
In Orange Empire Conference women’s track and field:
Riverside 74, Saddleback 67, Orange Coast 26--Jordi Manley won the 800 (2 minutes 30 seconds) and the1,500 (5:13) and Natalie Heer won the shotput (32-0) and discus (109-6) for Saddleback (6-2).
