Today Gonzaga, tomorrow the world.

With an invitation to try out for the U.S. Olympic team sitting on a desk in his room, Randy Wolf pitched a no-hitter in Pepperdine’s 2-0 victory over Gonzaga on Friday in a West Coast Conference game at Pepperdine.

Wolf (4-1), a 1993 graduate of El Camino Real High, struck out 11 and walked two while recording the fourth shutout of his career.

Earlier this week, Wolf was among 21 players invited to try out for Team USA in May at Millington, Tenn.

The sophomore played for Team USA last summer, posting a record of 4-0 and an earned-run average of 1.90. He is considered one of the top left-handed college pitchers in the nation.

“It feels awfully good to throw a no-hitter,” Wolf said. “I was able to throw my fastball and slider for strikes all game. I couldn’t get my curveball over the plate, but then that pitch clicked later in the game. It has been an outstanding week.”

Wolf needed 122 pitches to dispatch Gonzaga. Four batters reached base--two on walks in the seventh inning and two on errors by shortstop Dennis Konrady in the second.

Gonzaga (5-7, 0-1 in conference play) was playing its first-ever WCC game.

Matt Siwek (1-2) held the Waves (14-11, 5-0) scoreless until the eighth Chris Cosbey walked, took third on Konrady’s hit-and-run single and scored on Justin Hodgden’s sacrifice fly. Gerardo Gonzalez singled home Konrady.

Wolf, a 25th-round draft choice of the Dodgers in 1994, extended his string of scoreless innings to 18.

In his last outing, March 5, he pitched seven scoreless innings in Pepperdine’s 1-0 victory over top-ranked Cal State Fullerton.

Wolf, City Section player of the year in 1993 and ‘94, has allowed only 32 hits in 50 1/3 innings and has an ERA of 1.61. He has struck out 49 and walked 19.

This was the fifth no-hitter in 56 seasons of Pepperdine baseball and the first since Scott Marrett threw one against La Verne in 1985.
