Boros Shoots 66, Ties Burke for Lead at Bay Hill

A soft course and a still day led to low scores Saturday in the third round of the Bay Hill Invitational, in which Guy Boros shot a six-under-par 66 for a share of the lead with Patrick Burke.

Boros birdied four of the last five holes at the Orlando, Fla., course to get to 10-under 206 and into a tie with Burke, who shot a 69. Jeff Maggert was another stroke back.

Jeff Sluman, two shots behind as play began, determined that he had taken an improper drop on No. 17 after hitting his tee shot in the water in the second round and disqualified himself for having signed an incorrect scorecard.

Danielle Ammaccapane had three birdies in the last four holes and shot a six-under-par 66 for a two-stroke lead over Cathy Johnston-Forbe in the LPGA Ping-Welch’s Championship at Tucson. Ammaccapane is at 12-under-par 204.

Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain recovered from a double-bogey at the 13th hole to shoot a two-under 70 for a 15-under 201 and a one-shot lead over Colin Montgomery after the third round of the Desert Classic tournament at Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Football

Anaheim officials said the city had reached a one-year lease agreement, with options to extend up to three years, with the Seahawks to use the former Rams Park as their practice facility and offices. The Seahawks are expected to begin off-season training there Monday.

The Denver Broncos have signed free agent defensive back Erik McMillan, 29, who is trying to make a comeback after two seasons out of football. . . . The Indianapolis Colts signed free agent offensive guard Doug Widell, who played at Detroit last season.

Basketball

Kermit Davis, 36, will return to Idaho as coach, a position he left in 1990 to go to Texas A&M.; While with the Aggies, he became embroiled in NCAA rules violations, lost his job after one season and was put on NCAA probation. He has been an assistant at Utah State for two seasons.

Manuela di Centa of Italy won her second World Cup cross-country ski title by finishing fifth in the women’s 30-kilometer season finale in Oslo, Norway.

Annamarie Thomas of the Netherlands was timed in 1 minute 21.01 seconds and edged Christine Witty of West Allis, Wis., by 0.24 seconds to win the women’s 1,000 meters at the World Single-Distance Speedskating Championships at Hamar, Norway.

Eric Bergoust of Missoula, Mont., had the best second jump at Altenmarkt, Austria, to lead Americans into the top four spots in a World Cup aerials meet.

Boxing

Joe Bugner, 46, ended his comeback after Scott Welch’s right hook broke one of his ribs and the referee stopped the World Boxing Organization Inter-Continental heavyweight title fight at 2:48 of the second round in Berlin. . . . Also in Berlin, Rolf Rocchigiani floored American Jay Snyder twice in the fourth round to retain the WBO cruiserweight title. The fight was stopped with 55 seconds remaining in the round. . . . Naseem Hamed of Great Britain retained his WBO featherweight title by stopping Said Lawal of Nigeria in only 31 seconds in Glasgow, Scotland.

Motor Sports

Alex Zanardi led a 1-2-3 finish by Honda-powered cars in Brazil and grabbed the pole position for the Rio 400, the first CART IndyCar race in South America, with a fast lap of 40.162 seconds around the 1.8-mile oval.

Blaine Johnson led Top Fuel qualifying, Al Hofmann funny cars and Warren Johnson pro stock for today’s finals in the National Hot Rod Assn.’s Gatornationals at Gainesville, Fla.

Miguel Duhamel, a Canadian who lives in Los Angeles, held off Scott Russell by less than a wheel length to win the Daytona 200 motorcycle race in Florida.

Kenneth Carlsen beat Johan van Herck, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, to become the first Danish finalist in the Copenhagen Open. Carlsen will meet Cedric Pioline, a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 winner over Tim Henman.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. had three strikes in the final frame to defeat Brian LeClair, 258-257, in the finals of the Pro Bowlers Assn. Showboat Invitational in Las Vegas.
