The San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys were rattled by a magnitude 4.0 earthquake late Tuesday, but no damage or injuries were reported.

The Southern California Earthquake Center at Caltech in Pasadena reported that the tremor, which struck at 11:38 p.m., was centered 5 miles west of Newhall.

The earthquake was like a sonic boom, a sheriff’s deputy said.

“There were a couple booms and then some shaking,” said Deputy Mike Reddy of the sheriff’s Santa Clarita station.

At the Los Angeles Police Department Devonshire Division, Officer Marty Zehnter said several people in the building reported feeling the temblor. The agency also received several calls, none from people reporting damage or injuries.

The quake was the first measured in the Southland since March 13, when a 2.7-magnitude quake was detected northeast of Olancha.
