No. 3 Huntington Beach Tops Corona del Mar

Third-ranked Huntington Beach had little trouble with 10th-ranked Corona del Mar, sweeping the match in three games and keeping its undefeated record intact in nonleague boys’ volleyball Wednesday at Corona del Mar.

Led by Dave McKienzie, who had 18 kills, the Oilers beat Corona del Mar, 15-5, 15-4, 15-10. Huntington Beach is 5-0.

In other nonleague volleyball:

Los Alamitos 3, Long Beach St. Anthony 1--Chris Komer had 20 assists and Nathan Lowe had 10 kills to lead Los Alamitos, 15-2, 15-4, 7-15, 15-6.

Laguna Beach 3, Newport Harbor 2--Zilade Andric had 44 kills for host Laguna Beach, which won, 15-5, 11-15, 8-15, 15-8, 16-14. Wes Badorek had 17 kills and 10 blocks for Newport Harbor (0-3).

Laguna Hills 3, Century 0--Jon Marshall had 13 kills for Laguna Hills (4-2), which won, 15-2, 15-6, 16-14.

Mater Dei 3, Cypress 2--Steve Almaguer had 16 kills and Matt Souto had 15 for host Mater Dei (2-3), which won, 10-15, 15-9, 10-15, 15-7, 15-9.

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 3, Pacifica 0--Ryan Clarkson had 14 kills for host Garden Grove (2-4, 2-0), which won, 15-7, 15-12, 15-7.

In nonleague boys’ golf:

Costa Mesa 211, Garden Grove 227, Artesia 253--Medalist Greg Walters shot even-par 35 at Willowick for Costa Mesa (5-3).

Cypress 205, Western 234--Medalist Eric Wang shot one-over 36 at Cypress golf course for Cypress (7-3). Wang has been the medalist in eight of the Centurions’ 10 matches.

Diamond Bar 196, Savanna 212--Savanna’s Chris Eichman shot a two-over 37 at Dad Miller to earn co-medalist honors.

Fountain Valley 203, La Quinta 238--Jason Koh was the medalist with a one-over 37 on the par-36 course at Mile Square for Fountain Valley (7-1).

Santa Margarita 183, Sunny Hills 186--Steve Wagner shot two-under 34 at Los Coyotes for Santa Margarita (6-0, 1-0). Jim Pittenger shot par 36 for the Eagles and Terry Noe, Dusty Schmidt and Mike Kim all shot 36 for Sunny Hills. Jin Park shot two-over 38 for the Lancers (6-1).

Villa Park 382, Tustin 455--Ryan Michel was the medalist for Villa Park with a two-over 74 at Green River and Tustin Ranch.

In Century League boys’ swimming:

El Modena 111, Santa Ana Valley 60--Jeff Taylor and Toyokzu Tsujino were both double winners for El Modena (1-3, 1-0). Taylor won the 50 (25.29) and 100 freestyle (57.55) and Tsujino took the 100 butterfly (56.49) and the 500 freestyle (4:58.0).

Foothill 130, Orange 36--Brian Brown won the 200 individual medley (2:05.34), 100 backstroke (1:02.28) and participated on three winning relay teams for host No. 3 Foothill (5-1, 1-0).

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 91, Irvine 79--Fifth-ranked Santa Margarita won seven of eight individual events to beat second-ranked Irvine.

John Peterson, Frank Uxa and Philippe Demers won their individual events with each competing on two winning relays. Uxa posted a Southern Section Division I qualifying time in the 100 backstroke, winning in 55.62. Demers also posted a section qualifying time, swimming a 51.85 in the 100 butterfly, almost four seconds faster than the qualifying time.

Peterson was first in the 50 (20.94) and the 100 freestyles (45.84), posting qualifying times in both events.

Century League girls’ swimming:

El Modena 118, Santa Ana Valley 47--Jessica Powell recorded a Southern Section Division I qualifying time in the 50 freestyle, winning the event in 25.14. Christina Vasconcellos won the 200 freestyle (2:12.0) and the 100 backstroke (1:08.11) for visiting El Modena (3-1, 1-0).

Foothill 90, Orange 80--Kirstin Kamps’ victory in the 100 butterfly was the turning point as host Foothill (3-3, 1-0) held on to defeat Orange, despite winning only three of 11 events.

Orange’s Alyson Edoff was first in the 200 freestyle (1:57.78) and 500 freestyle (5:27.31).

Villa Park 99, Canyon 71--Two victories each by Jenny Michel and Jessica Klugman, plus a 400 freestyle relay victory, boosted Villa Park. Michel won the 200 individual medley (2:19.23) and the 100 butterfly (1:07.94). Klugman won the 50 (25.38) and 100 (55.04) freestyles. Maureen Dunn won the 200 free (2:08.06) for Villa Park (4-0, 1-0).

In the Golden West League:

Rosary 136, Saddleback 23--Noel DeGrasse won the 200 IM in a personal best time of 2:28.7 for Rosary (3-0, 1-0).

In the Sea View League:

Irvine 130.5, Santa Margarita 39.5--Irvine won all but one event with Olympic-bound Amanda Beard making her high school debut winning the 200 individual medley (2:08.32) and the 100 freestyle (55.66) for visiting Irvine. Freshman Heidi Kraus won two events for the Vaqueros, including the 200 freestyle (1:56.75) and the 100 fly (59.69), and posted Southern Section qualifying times in both events.

In nonleague softball:

Santa Ana 8, Anaheim 2--Lisa Bernal was two for four with two doubles and two RBIs for host Santa Ana (3-6).

Tustin 4, Corona del Mar 3--Catherine Keller drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out single.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Laguna Beach 12, San Clemente 6--Sophomore Aaron Talarico swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for host Laguna Beach (4-3), which won eight of nine singles sets. San Clemente is 3-6.

Sunny Hills 13, Garden Grove 5--Joe Williamson and Chris Chung swept in doubles, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, for host Sunny Hills (3-2), which won eight doubles sets.

Western 17, Buena Park 7--Brix Martinez and Michael Chiang swept at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-2, and each won their singles match, 6-0, for Western (4-5).

Woodbridge 14, Foothill 4--The No. 2 doubles team of Greg Lezy and Brandon Shainfeld and the No. 3 team of Brent deSaxe and Amir Bagherpour swept their matches for Woodbridge (3-1) at Foothill.
