Titans Beat Hawaii Hilo Again, 18-3

Cal State Fullerton overwhelmed Hawaii Hilo for a second consecutive night, pounding out 18 hits, including eight doubles, to defeat the Vulcans, 18-3, in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Titan Field.

Jeremy Giambi was two for two with four runs batted in and Mike Lamb, who went two for four with three RBIs, hit his third home run of the series. Giambi has 12 RBIs in the two games.

Brent Billingsley improved to 7-0, giving up three hits and one run over five innings.

The Titans (25-2) have won 10 consecutive games and continue to improve on their best-ever start to a season. Fullerton has outscored opponents, 84-11, in its last seven games.

Jerome Alviso, who lost his job at second base two weeks ago, went three for four with three runs scored, replacing the injured Jack Jones at shortstop. Alviso has 10 hits in 12 at-bats since taking over for Jones.

Skip Kiil, Mark Kotsay, C.J. Ankrum and Tony Martinez each had two hits for the Titans. Ankrum had two doubles and three RBIs.

Cal State Fullerton, which defeated Hawaii-Hilo, 23-1, on Thursday, hosts the Vulcans (8-22) in the series finale at 7 tonight at Titan Field.

In the University of Mobile softball tournament:

Southern California College 5, Central Methodist (Mo.) 3--Jen Caruso had two hits and two RBIs for Southern California College in the first of three games. Sarah Waters had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

In the final two games Angela Wolf combined for four hits, including the game winning hit in an International tie breaker against Auburn’s club team. SCC won, 3-2, in the bottom of eighth.

SCC’s only loss of the was to Mobile, 6-3.

In the Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne men’s volleyball tournament:

Long Beach State 3, Ball State 2--Tom Hoff had 23 kills, 11 digs and 10 blocks to lead No. 3 Long Beach State over 12th-ranked Ball State, 7-15, 15-9, 15-6, 10-15, 15-11.

Martin Wagner had 22 kills and 11 blocks and Forrest Cheney had 49 assists and seven digs for the 49er’s. Travis Barr had six kills, nine digs and six blocks. Long Beach State will play Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne today.

In the NCAA Division I wrestling championships:

Orlando DeCastroverde of Cal State Fullerton lost to David Morgan of Michigan State in a 118-pound consolation match by major decision, 14-4, and was eliminated in Minneapolis. Shane Valdez, a Calvary Chapel graduate who wrestles for Oklahoma, was beaten in the quarterfinals but still remains in the tournament after beating Jason Nure of Iowa State, 3-2, in the consolation bracket of the 118-pound class.
