Journell Helps Power Saddleback Past Orange Coast

Saddleback’s Christy Journell doubled home Mindy Cook with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give Saddleback a 2-1 victory over Orange Coast in an Orange Empire Conference softball game Friday at Saddleback.

Journell had three of Saddleback’s four hits. The Gauchos improved to 17-6, 6-3 in conference.

Orange Coast (3-16, 1-8) tied it, 1-1, scoring a run in the top of the seventh.

In other conference games:

Cypress 3, Golden West 0--The Rustlers (8-8, 4-5) managed only two hits. Cypress (21-9, 7-2) scored three runs in the third inning.

Fullerton 6, Irvine Valley 0--Kristy Bonwell (7-3) pitched a one-hitter, striking out six and walking three for Fullerton (20-5, 8-1). Irvine Valley’s Sarah Usherwood hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth to break up the no-hitter. Irvine Valley is 13-14-1, 2-7.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming:

Golden West sweeps--David Payot won the 200 freestyle (1:47.70), the 500 freestyle (4:48.03) and anchored the 400 medley relay (3:59.17) for Golden West (2-0). Teammate Andreas Lidholm won the 200 backstroke (2:05.51) and the 200 individual medley (2:04.57). Golden West defeated El Camino, 78-20, and Fullerton, 78-11.

Saddleback splits--The Gauchos defeated Cypress, 159-41, but lost to Palomar, 140-91. Charles Malki won the 50 freestyle (22.56) and Breno Nogueira won the 200 individual medley (2:07.35).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s swimming:

Golden West splits-- Amanda Kidd won the 50 breaststroke (36.61), the 50 freestyle (26.98) and led off the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:53.83) for Golden West (1-1). The Rustlers defeated Fullerton, 89-32, but lost to El Camino, 72-58.

Saddleback sweeps--Alisa Burden won the 50 butterfly (29.19), the 100 backstroke (1:06.80) and led off the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:46.68) for Saddleback, which defeated Cypress, 205-84, and Palomar, 167-127.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s volleyball:

Orange Coast 3, Long Beach 1--Kevin Reid had 17 kills for visiting Orange Coast, which won, 15-3, 16-14, 12-15, 15-6. Troy Langley and Casey Jennings each had 13 kills for Orange Coast (13-1, 10-1). Long Beach is 9-1, 9-1.
