Brea Olinda Girls Win Relay Meet Title

Fourth-ranked Brea Olinda edged third-ranked Woodbridge, 127-120, to win the girls’ team title at the Brea Olinda UNOCAL Relays Saturday at Brea Olinda High School, in a meet that featured three of the top five squads in the county.

Brea Olinda won two team events (shuttle hurdles and long jump), but was second in seven others. The Ladycats were led by individual-event winners Maika Nelson (100 meters) and Sara Bonilla (100 hurdles).

In the boys’ event, Garden Grove was first with 120 1/2 points, and Upland was second with 90.

At the Stanford Track and Field Invitational:

Huntington Beach runners do well--Tony Trueba placed sixth in the 3,000 meters in 8 minutes 56.24 seconds and Dan Gaston was 12th in 9:02.07. Gaston also finished seventh in his heat of the mile in 4:34.50.

Jess Strutzel, 10th overall and sixth in his heat, finished in the boys’ mile with a time of 4:28.52.

The team’s 3,200-meter relay team was fifth (8:17.87).

In Golden West League baseball:

Tustin 5, Westminster 2--Rich Gonzales and Rudy Aguilera homered and Eric Bell (2-1) gave up 10 hits for Tustin (4-3, 1-2).

In Sunset League baseball:

Marina 2, Esperanza 1--Brian Bingham had a home run in the first inning for Marina.

In nonleague baseball:

Buena Park 9, Rancho Alamitos 4--Daniel Flores was three for three with a home run and two RBIs for Buena Park (6-6). Flores also pitched a complete game to win for the Coyotes.

Foothill 4-11, Katella 3-3--Foothill (8-1) swept fourth-ranked Katella as Aaron Oginga scored the winning run in the first game on an error by Katella with two outs and the bases loaded.

Kennedy 14-9, Western 13-8--Lance Funaika hit a game-winning homer in the seventh inning of the first game to lead Kennedy (6-4). Teammate Josh Naslund was three for four with two RBIs.

Western had four home runs in the game.
