Cal State Fullerton Sweeps Hawaii Hilo

Cal State Fullerton completed its sweep of Hawaii Hilo with a 14-3 nonconference victory Saturday at Titan Field.

The Titans (26-2), who have won 11 consecutive games and are off to their best start in school history, outscored Hawaii Hilo, 55-7, in the three-game series.

Mark Kotsay was three for four with four runs batted in and Skip Kiil, Steve Chatham and Jason Giambi also contributed three hits for Cal State Fullerton.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 7-7, Concordia 6-6--Derrick Bly was four for four in the first game of a doubleheader for Concordia. Bly also had two hits in the second game and extended his hitting streak to 24 games.

In the Rebel softball tournament:

Chapman completes successful tournament--Kasie Chavez hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to lead Chapman to a 2-0 victory over Mankato (Minn.) State. Chapman defeated four top-10 teams during the weeklong tournament, in which they finished 8-1.

At the La Verne Invitational track meet:

SCC women set three records--Junior Nikee Pool from Southern California College qualified for the NAIA nationals in the 800 meters, taking first place in a time of 2:13.84. A time of 2:16.00 is needed to advance to the nationals in Atlanta in late May.

Three school records were set for SCC in the women’s division. Isis Orejel won the 200 (26.44), Angie La Mance won the long jump (15-5) and the 1,600 relay team (Aimme Buxman, La Mance, Orejel, Pool) finished in 4:03.15.

In the men’s division, Kevin Carlson set a meet record in the high jump, with a leap of 7-0 1/2. His brother Brian took second with a jump of 6-8 3/4.

In nonconference track:

Kovacs wins--UC Irvine’s Pete Kovacs cleared 15 feet 7 inches to win the pole vault. The Anteater men finished the meet in sixth place with 58 points. Iowa won the men’s division with 134 points.

UC Irvine fared better in the women’s event, finishing fourth (112.5 points). Cornell finished first with 130.5 points.

In nonconference volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne 0--Tom Hoff had 10 kills in a victory for Long Beach State (16-4), 15-5, 15-1, 15-1.

At the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships:

Former Calvary Chapel wrestler competes--Oklahoma wrestler Shane Valdez lost in the 118-pound weight class. Valdez, a graduate of Calvary Chapel, lost in overtime, 9-7, in a seventh-place consolation match to North Carolina State’s Mike Miller.
