BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : Mariners Release Polonia
The Seattle Mariners won’t begin the season with Luis Polonia in left field or Chris Bosio in their starting rotation.
Polonia was released Tuesday from his minor-league contract. Polonia failed to win the left-field job in competition against Darren Bragg.
Bosio was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of an ailing right knee.
Also, Seattle purchased catcher John Marzano from triple-A Tacoma, optioned pitchers Tim Davis and Salomon Torres to Tacoma and assigned catcher Todd Pratt and pitcher Mike Butcher to their minor-league camp.

The Florida Marlins waived pitcher Ryan Bowen and optioned pitcher Livan Hernandez to triple-A Charlotte. The Marlins also sent infielder Russ Morman and outfielders Tommy Gregg and Darrell Whitmore to their minor league camp. . . . Pitcher Bill Swift was put on the 15-day disabled list by the Colorado Rockies. . . . Texas Ranger shortstop Benji Gil underwent surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back and is expected to be sidelined two months. . . . The San Francisco Giants waived reliever Scott Service for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release and put pitchers Sergio Valdez and Rich DeLucia on the 15-day disabled list. . . . The Cincinnati Reds optioned infielder Eric Owens to triple-A Indianapolis and assigned infielder Roberto Mejia to the minor-league camp. . . . The Chicago Cubs reassigned pitcher Duane Ward, catcher Matt Merullo and infielder Bret Barberie to their minor league camp. . . . The New York Mets placed pitcher Bill Pulsipher on the 15-day disabled list. . . . The Philadelphia Phillies put pitchers Tyler Green, Bobby Munoz, Curt Schilling and David West on the 15-day disabled list.
