Westlake Puts DeArman on Channel Islands, 6-0

Kelly DeArman (8-3) pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead Westlake High to a 6-0 Marmonte League softball victory over Channel Islands on Thursday at Channel Islands.

Sarah Koppel had three hits, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning, for Westlake (10-3, 2-0 in league play).

Crescenta Valley 24, Rosemead 0--Danielle Ferreira allowed only an infield single in a nonleague game at Rosemead.

Hope Robertshaw had four hits, and Makenzie Mallory, Kellie Labor and Leslie Linnemayer each had three for Crescenta Valley (9-2).

Kennedy 8, Birmingham 0--Sandra Durazo had 18 strikeouts for Kennedy (10-1, 4-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Birmingham. Durazo struck out the side four times.

Verdugo Hills 13, Belmont 0--Melanie Wood had 20 strikeouts, raising her total to 39 over the past two games, and allowed only one hit in a Northern Conference game.

Rian Standley hit a two-run home run to highlight a six-run fourth inning for Verdugo Hills (9-2, 4-0).

Gabi Robles had three hits for the Dons.

Saugus 5, Burbank 0--Nicole Giordano had three hits, including a two-run home run in the second inning, for the Centurions (10-2, 1-0) in a Foothill League game at Saugus.

Jamie Gillies (7-1) pitched a four-hitter and had five strikeouts.

Hart 2, Burroughs 0--Mary Colleran struck out 13 and allowed only two hits for Hart (10-2) in a Foothill League opener at Burroughs.

Bethel Christian 9, Antelope Valley Christian 4--Kim Guess hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning for Bethel Christian (8-2, 2-0) in an Agape League game.

Dawn Miranda had four strikeouts for Antelope Valley Christian (2-8, 0-1).

Pius X 6, St. Genevieve 0--Beatrice Ochoa pitched a shutout with four strikeouts for the Warriors in a Sunrise League game at St. Genevieve.

Stacy Champy (2-3) gave up 14 hits, one walk and struck out eight for the Valiants (2-3, 2-1).

Village Christian 20, Marshall 0--Jesse Laivo pitched a no-hitter and had nine strikeouts for the Crusaders (8-3, 1-0) in an Alpha League game at Victory Park.

Sarah Sutton had two hits and five RBIs, and Jackie Arande had two hits and three RBIs.

Valencia 4, Canyon 1--April Markham (2-10, 1-0) allowed four hits and struck out two for the Vikings (2-10, 1-0) in a Foothill League game at Valencia.

Lisa Villsenor gave up three hits, one walk, hit a batter and struck out two for the Cowboys.

BASEBALL

Chaminade 14, Taft, Calif. 3--Sophomore Bruce Greenwood, promoted from the junior varsity this week, relieved Mike Whitaker in the first inning and allowed no hits for the final 6 1/3 innings for the Eagles (10-1-1) in a nonleague game at Taft, near Bakersfield.

BOYS’ TRACK

Rio Mesa 87, Buena 53, Dos Pueblos 31--Randy Hurt and Sean Phillips each won two events for the Spartans in a Channel League meet at Dos Pueblos.

Hurt clocked 15.3 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles and 41.8 in the 300 intermediates. Phillips leaped 19 feet 7 inches in the long jump and 40-6 1/2 in the triple jump for Rio Mesa (3-0, 3-0).

St. Bonaventure 64, Nordhoff 63--Ryan McConnell won four events for the Seraphs in a nonleague meet at Nordhoff.

McConnell clocked 11.4 in the 100 meters, 24.1 in the 220-yard dash, leaped 20-4 1/2 in the long jump and cleared 5-6 in the high jump.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Palmdale 67, Quartz Hill 65-- Michelle Perry won four events but the Rebels (2-1, 2-1) fell short in a Golden League meet.

Perry ran 12.7 into the wind in the 100, a wind-aided 24.8 in the 200 and 47.0 in the 300 low hurdles. She also leaped 16-1 in the long jump, but Palmdale (4-0, 3-0) prevailed by winning the 1,600 relay.

Sophomore Kadrina Coffee, runner-up in the 400 in last year’s U.S. Track & Field Junior championships, won the 400 (65.4) and 800 (2:34.0) for the Falcons.

Thousand Oaks 117, Channel Islands 32, Westlake 22--Sharika Higgins of Channel Islands won three events and ran a leg on the victorious 400 relay team, but Thousand Oaks’ depth prevailed in a Marmonte League meet.

Higgins, defending Ventura County champion in the 100, 200 and 400 meters, timed 12.3 in the 100, 25.4 in the 220 and leaped 17-3 1/2 in the long jump.

Kim Mortensen, the 1995 national cross-country champion, and Jelyn Lu were double winners for Thousand Oaks (4-0, 4-0).

Mortensen ran 2:22.4 in the 880 and 5:16.3 in the mile. Lu timed 16.3 in the 110-yard hurdles and leaped 33 feet in the triple jump.

Buena 82, Rio Mesa 54, Dos Pueblos 51--Stacy Hebert and Renee McCurtis each won two events as the Bulldogs won a Channel League meet.

Hebert timed 12.9 in the 100 and 47.2 in the 300 low hurdles, and McCurtis leaped 15-2 1/2 in the long jump and 33-4 3/4 in the triple jump for Buena (4-0, 4-0).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Granada Hills d. Cleveland, 15-1, 15-1, 15-5--Donald Puathasnanon had 11 kills and five aces for the Highlanders (6-1, 3-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference match.

Kennedy d. Birmingham, 15-7, 15-2, 15-10--Jeff Toon had six kills and four blocks for the Golden Cougars (4-3, 3-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference match.

Bell-Jeff d. Mary Star, 15-6, 15-7, 15-1--David Montes had 27 assists for the Guards (8-3, 5-1) in a Santa Fe League match.

Chatsworth d. Taft, 15-7, 7-15, 15-4, 15-9--Stephen Wiessner had 18 kills and eights blocks for the Chancellors (5-2, 4-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Taft.

Sherman Oaks CES d. King Drew 15-1, 15-6, 15-4--Asher Kaufman had nine kills for Sherman Oaks CES (5-2, 3-1) in a Magnet League match.

Crespi d. Chaminade 15-4, 15-3, 15-3--Brian Spratt had 12 kills and Matt Miller added 31 assists for Crespi (6-4, 3-3).
