TRASHY IDEAS: There’s apparently money to be made on all sides of the battle for recycling. The city of Santa Clarita recently won a $4,150 grant just to get people to start recycling more milk cartons. . . . City officials say they stumbled upon the grant news while surfing the Internet.

THE HUSTLER: Ken Scherer is a noted film producer and television veteran, but the 47-year-old man’s legacy may have less to do with selling tickets than selling himself and his cause to potential donors. Scherer is the new head of the Motion Picture & Television Fund Foundation, a job that requires him to look out for the health and welfare of retired entertainers. With a 10-year waiting list facing prospective applicants to the famed motion picture retirement home on Mulholland Drive, Scherer knows he has a big job ahead of him. (B1)
