Saddleback Pulls Off a Rare Triple Play

Saddleback turned a triple play to highlight a 2-0 victory over Cerritos in a pool-play game at the College of the Desert softball tournament Wednesday.

Saddleback (23-6) led, 1-0, in the bottom of the sixth when Cerritos put runners on first and second with no outs.

Cerritos tried to advance the runners with a sacrifice bunt attempt. The bunt was popped up, and Saddleback third baseman Treva Whitaker caught it on the fly. She threw to first to Amy Tanner before the Cerritos runner could return for the second out, and Tanner threw to Misty Thompson at second for the third out.

Saddleback added an insurance run in the seventh and Jodi Smith pitched a three-hitter to improve to 14-2.

Saddleback also defeated Imperial Valley, 3-1, and Grossmont, 8-0, in other pool-play games. Stacy Henderson hit a three-run homer against Grossmont.

Saddleback plays Southwestern at 9 a.m. today in the quarterfinals. The championship game is at 3 p.m.

In other tournament games:

Cypress wins three--Christa Saindon had six hits and two RBIs to help Cypress (29-10) win three pool-play games. Saindon hit her sixth home run in a 12-0 victory over San Diego Mesa, tying a single-season school record.

Cypress’ Jamie Wilkes pitched a three-hitter in a 5-0 victory over Ventura and also was the winning pitcher in a 5-1 victory over Southwestern.

Cypress plays Cerritos at 11 a.m. today in the quarterfinals.

In nonconference baseball:

Golden West 14, Ventura 1--Pete Cuellar (2-4) pitched six innings of hitless relief, striking out nine; Kevin Loken had three hits and three RBIs and Charlie Tuggle and Tim Humble each had three hits and two RBIs for Golden West (12-15).

In the Santa Maria Allen Hancock baseball tournament:

Cypress wins two--Randy Case drove in two runs in the Chargers’ 9-5 victory over Merced in the first game and had three hits and three RBIs in its 11-3 victory over Allen Hancock in the second game.

Keith Ginter had three hits and scored two runs in the second game and Scott Daley had three hits and two runs scored on the day for Cypress (25-8).
