Woodbridge’s Artunian Sparks Victory Over Dana Hills

Sophomore Adam Artunian won the decisive singles set to help Woodbridge, ranked fourth in the county, hand No. 2 Dana Hills its first loss of the season, 10-8, in a nonleague boys’ tennis match Wednesday at Dana Hills High.

Woodbridge (10-3) led, 8-7, going into the final rotation of singles and Artunian defeated Brian Kent, 6-4, to give the Warriors their 10th set victory.

Brandon Shainfeld and Greg Levy swept in doubles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for Woodbridge, which won six of nine doubles sets.

Dana Hills is 10-1.

In the Pacific Coast League:

University 16, Laguna Hills 2--Greg Biorkman swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, in singles and Chris Seid and Jon Biorkman swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, in doubles for third-ranked University (9-2, 4-0 in league).

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 12, El Toro 6--Andrew Tsu swept in singles, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, and Cody Shedd also swept in singles, 6-4, 6-0, 6-0, for host eighth-ranked Santa Margarita (10-4, 2-2).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 12, Fountain Valley 6--Steve McLaoghlin and Conway Lin swept, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5, and Beau Kojima and Bryan Baker swept at singles for Edison (4-2, 4-1).

In nonleague tennis:

Corona del Mar 10, San Marino 8--Taylor Dent swept in singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, for visiting Corona del Mar (9-2), ranked No. 1 in Orange County and second in Division I. San Marino (9-2) is ranked second in Division II.

In South Coast League golf:

Dana Hills 388, San Clemente 400--Medalist Will Smith finished with a two-under 70 at Pacific for Dana Hills (3-6, 3-2). Smith eagled the eighth hole on the Lytham nine, finishing with a three-under 33, and played the Muirfield nine in one-over 37.

Dana Hills’ Richard Sorenson shot two-over 74.

In nonleague golf:

Los Alamitos 389, El Toro 415--Jason Beach was three-over-par 74 at El Toro and Cypress golf courses for Los Alamitos (10-4).

In Freeway League boys’ swimming:

Sunny Hills 103, Fullerton 75--Sunny Hills’ Hironari Sakoda won the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley (2 minutes 1.20 seconds). Sakoda’s 200 IM time was the county’s third-fastest time this season.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 93, University 77--Matt Kwok won the 200 freestyle (1:49.32) and the 500 free (4:55.32) for fifth-ranked Laguna Hills (5-1, 3-0).

In Freeway League girls’ swimming:

Sunny Hills 114, Fullerton 71--Maria Lazaroba won the 50 freestyle (27.7) and 100 breaststroke (1:17) for Fullerton (2-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 93, University 77--Nicole Weiland’s 500 freestyle victory proved to be the turning point for fifth-ranked Laguna Hills, which trailed University by four points before the event. The Hawks won the 200 and 400 free relays and the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke. Alexis Shubin was a double winner for Laguna Hills (4-1, 3-0).

In Sunset League boys’ volleyball:

Fountain Valley 3, Los Alamitos 0--Casey Brewer had 14 kills for Fountain Valley (5-4, 2-1), which won, 15-2, 15-4, 15-3.

Huntington Beach 3, Edison 1--Dave McKenzie had 17 kills for visiting Huntington Beach (8-1, 2-1), which won, 15-9, 15-7, 15-8.
