Coalition Against Violence Makes Plan for Peace March

A coalition of anti-violence groups gathered Thursday at the headquarters of the Brotherhood Crusade in South-Central Los Angeles to announce plans for a peace march on April 20.

Lorna Hawkins, whose two sons were killed in separate drive-by shootings, said she hopes the march will promote victims’ rights and a greater awareness of the devastating impact of crime on families and communities. Hawkins is the president of Drive By Agony, one of several groups sponsoring the march.

The demonstration will start in Lynwood. Participants will then meet at Olvera Street and walk to the County Hall of Administration in downtown Los Angeles, Hawkins said.

Hawkins’ group received a $2,500 grant from the Brotherhood Crusade, a charity and advocacy group, to help keep its doors open, said Brotherhood Crusade vice president Kenneth Collins.

“There is a lot of dialogue about reducing crime and being tough on crime,” Collins said. “But one thing that is universally understood is that a wake of tragedy is left behind for a victim’s family and loved ones.”

Other groups represented at the meeting were Women Against Gun Violence, Los Angeles Teens on Target and Community Youth Gang Services.
