Lloyd, Dent Reach Tennis Quarterfinals

Thomas Lloyd of Yorba Linda and Taylor Dent of Newport Beach upset fourth-seeded Michael Duquette of Virginia Beach, Va., and Yorke Allen of McLean, Va., in the second round of boys’ 16 division doubles Sunday at the Easter Bowl Junior Tennis Championships at the Riviera Resort and Country Club in Palm Springs.

Lloyd and Dent defeated Duquette and Allen in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to reach Thursday’s quarterfinals. Earlier in the day Lloyd and Dent advanced to the second round with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Oliver Choo of Princeton Junction, N.J., and Carter Morris of Washington.

In the girls’ 14 division singles, 13-year-old Nadia Vaughan of Corona del Mar, advanced to the second round by defeating Shika Uberoi of Wesley Chapel, Fla., in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Nadia’s sister, Nina, won her first set in the girls’ 16, but ended up losing the match to Kristin Lam of Hilton Head, S.C., 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

* Huntington Beach’s Melissa Esmero, 14, lost in the first round to Jessica Pelto of Longwood, Fla., 6-1, 6-3.

* Katey Becker of Orange lost in the girls’ 16s to Kristin Stubbs of Hilton Head, 6-1, 6-3.

* In the girls’ 14, Caylan Leslie of Newport Beach lost 6-3, 7-5, to Erin Burdette of Jackson, Ga.
