FRATERNITY SUSPENDED
Acting on complaints of hazing and forced alcohol consumption, Loyola Marymount University officials barred a fraternity from operating on the Westchester campus until 2000.
The fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha, was suspended last week after an investigation into allegations by fraternity members about drinking and hazing during pledge activities, said Patrick Naessens, assistant to Loyola’s vice president for student affairs.
The action also resulted in the Pi Kappa Alpha national headquarters suspending the fraternity’s charter, Naessens said. No disciplinary action was taken against any of the 50 members of the social organization.
Although Naessens would not detail the complaints, letters received by The Times from young men pledging the fraternity stated that pledges sometimes were made to drink to the point of vomiting or passing out, were yelled at and were forced to sleep in a garage.
Officials at the private Catholic university said this is the first time they can remember closing a fraternity chapter because of hazing.
