Interim Director Nominated to Lead Department of Aging

Mayor Richard Riordan on Wednesday nominated Ann Delorise Smith as general manager of the Department of Aging, where she is acting director.

Smith, who has worked for the city for 26 years and served as a senior management analyst at the Department of Aging since its inception in 1983, would oversee 51 employees and a budget of $14 million designed to coordinate services for 500,000 senior citizens citywide.

“Ann has the experience and know-how to effectively face the challenges of providing care for our city’s elderly,” Riordan said in a statement. “She is an innovative thinker who will continue to provide the Department of Aging with excellent leadership, new approaches to difficult problems and creative programs which serve the elderly with care and dignity.”

Riordan also nominated a new slate of candidates for the Advisory Council on Aging, including social worker Jan Braken, Sherman Oaks resident Patricia Frandson, Korean community leader Laura Jeon, Linda Lee, administrator of the UCLA Center for Aging; Cliff Rosett of Seniors for Action, Mariela Santamaria Bauer, administrator of Alta Med Health Service Corp.; USC Prof. Kate Wilbur, nurse Secela McKinney, and community activist Claude Green.

The nominations must be confirmed by the City Council.
