CSUN Signs 2 Soccer Recruits

Federico Arroyo, a forward from Van Nuys High and Gabriel Ortega, a midfielder from Birmingham, have signed to play soccer at Cal State Northridge next season.

Arroyo, who graduated in 1995, scored 35 goals that season and led the Wolves into the City Section playoffs.

Ortega starred for the Braves the past two seasons and helped them to consecutive City playoff berths. He is recovering from a broken leg suffered in a February game.

Simi Valley High striker Sean Herrity has signed to play at New Mexico.

Herrity scored 19 goals for the Pioneers and earned Marmonte League co-offensive player of the year and second team All-Southern Section Division I honors.

Track and Field

Balasz Kiss of USC, Connie Price-Smith of Reebok and Lacy Barnes-Mileham of Nike head the list of entrants scheduled to compete in an invitational meet for throwers Thursday at Antelope Valley College.

Kiss, a Hungarian and the No. 3-ranked hammer thrower in the world in 1995 by Track & Field News magazine, is a three-time NCAA champion in the event.

Price-Smith was ranked sixth in the U.S. in the women’s discus last year and Barnes-Mileham was ninth.

Gary Kirchhoff, who threw the men’s discus 198 feet 5 inches while competing unattached last year, is the top entrant in that event.

A women’s hammer throw event is scheduled although the field is still being assembled, according to Antelope Valley Coach Mark Covert.

Football

Pasadena Blair High’s Norman Jenigan and Pasadena’s Todd Rodriguez have transferred to Monroe.

Jenigan is a 6-foot-2, 295-pound junior defensive tackle.

Rodriguez, a sophomore defensive end, is 6-5, 250.

Gymnastics

Three gymnasts from the Monarchs National Gymnastics Training Center in Agoura Hills have qualified for regional competition in the U.S. Gymnastics Federation.

Jamie Walker, 16, from Newbury Park, qualified at Level 9. From Agoura Hills, Theresa O’Gara, 14, and Lyndsey Krantz, 13, qualified at Level 8.
