Central Los Angeles : HELP FOR VETERANS

Share

Homeless and other disadvantaged veterans will have a chance to clear up old traffic tickets, have their vision checked and even get a clean shave at a Veterans Care Day from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Huntington Park Municipal Court at 6548 Miles Ave.

The first such fair sponsored by the state’s Employment Development Department, the event is designed to give a helping hand to “men and women down on their luck and give them alternatives,” said George Garcia, a disabled veterans outreach specialist.

Veterans who have old traffic tickets that have turned into bench warrants may be able to receive amnesty in return for agreeing to do some form of community service, Garcia said.

Lawyers also will be on hand to offer free legal advice. Members of a nonprofit credit counseling group will help veterans salvage their credit. Workshops in resume writing and job training also will be available, Garcia said.

In addition, 12 students of a cosmetology school will offer free haircuts and shaves and a food bank will give out nonperishable goods.

Veterans interested in participating are asked to preregister by calling (213) 728-9966.
