An attorney suspected in the slaying of his estranged wife and a man Saturday in Denver shot and killed himself Tuesday after he was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol near Barstow for an improperly attached rear license plate, authorities said.

The motorist was identified by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department as Duncan Cameron. A former Denver prosecutor, Cameron had been questioned but not held by Denver homicide investigators after his wife, Debra Cameron, and college student Nathan Clark--who apparently tried to intervene--were found dead of gunshot and knife wounds in a downtown Denver parking garage.

A CHP spokesman said the officer who stopped Cameron did not know he had been questioned for the murders. Cameron gave a different name to the officer and then shot himself, the Sheriff’s Department said.
