PTA Official Gets School Board Post

A PTA official has been appointed to fill an unexpired term on the Anaheim City School District Board of Education.

Susan Preus, 40, president-elect of the Anaheim Elementary Council PTA, was one of nine candidates vying for the board seat formerly held by Jeanne Blackwell, who resigned in February because of poor health. Blackwell died three days after board members accepted her resignation. Her four-year term expires in November.

Board President Betty Patterson said a major factor in the unanimous decision to appoint Preus was her history of involvement in district activities, including participation in numerous advisory committees.

“We need teamwork, and she understands what is happening in the district and what the needs of the children are,” Patterson said.

Preus, a homemaker, said her main goal as a board member will be finding solutions to the school district’s problem of overcrowded facilities.

Measures taken by board members over the last several years in response to the rapidly growing student population have included putting schools on year-round schedules, installing portable classrooms and adjusting school boundaries.
