Crook, Miramontes Lead Katella

Charles Crook and Erik Miramontes each won two events to help Katella win the Empire League boys’ track and field championship Thursday at Rancho Santiago College.

Crook won the 100 meters in 10.5 seconds and the 200 in 21.75. Miramontes won the 1,600 in 4:30.87 and the 3,200 in 10:01.93.

Jason Carpenter added victories for the Knights in the shotput (49 feet 7 inches) and discus (160-11). Katella won the team title with 171 points. El Dorado (122) was second.

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park wins--Terrance Broussard and Arthur Frazier helped lead Buena Park to the league title by winning two events each. Broussard won the high jump with a leap of 6-1, the triple jump (41-2) and took third place in the long jump (20-4 1/2). Frazier took first in both hurdle events, winning the 110 in 15.96 and the 300 in 41.03. Buena Park finished with 149 points and Troy was second with 106.

In the Garden Grove League finals:

Griswold wins three events--Kevin Griswold of Garden Grove won the 100 (10.9), 200 (22.7) and 400 (50.1) and was named athlete of the meet.

In the Garden Grove League girls’ finals:

Axton sets new mark--Los Amigos’ Carrie Axton broke an 11-year-old league record, winning the discus with a mark of 141-2. The old mark was set in 1985 at 139-0. Stacy Young of Pacifica and Natasha Drayden of Rancho Alamitos each won three events and were named co-athletes of the meet.

Young won the 800 (2:30.6), 1,600 (5:35.4), and 3,200 (11:58.5) and Drayden won the 100 (13.5), 200 (28.1) and long jump (16-0 1/2).

In the Empire League finals:

Katella wins--Stacy Wright won the triple jump (33-3 1/2), finished second in the 100 hurdles and third in the high jump for the Knights, who had 157 points. Heather Cunningham won the shotput (117-6) for second place El Dorado (113 1/2).

Loara’s Melissa Price won the discus (124-7).

In the Freeway League:

Troy wins--Sunny Nicholas of Sunny Hills posted the fourth fastest time in the county this year in the 300 hurdles, winning the race in 45.98, more than three seconds faster than her personal best this year. Nicholas also won the 100 hurdles in 15.40. Heather Garritson won the 800 meters (2:24.96), the 1,600 (5:16.63) and the 3,200 (11:43.6) for Buena Park. Troy won the title with 153 points, Sunny Hills finished second (127) and La Habra third (94).
