Two Big Innings Help Long Beach Roll Over San Jose State, 15-1

Long Beach State scored five runs in the fifth and ninth innings to beat San Jose State, 15-1, in a Big West Conference game Friday at San Jose State.
The 49ers remain a game ahead of Cal State Fullerton, which scored three runs in the ninth to defeat UC Santa Barbara, 4-3.
Jeff Tagliaferri drove in a run with a double in the fifth and Al Watson had a two-run single for Long Beach State (31-20, 14-5). Tagliaferri, who was three for four with four runs batted in, knocked in two runs in the ninth with his second double and Keith Cowley also drove in two runs with the 49ers’ eighth double of the game.
Marcus Jones struck out a career-high 13 batters and limited the Spartans (26-27, 6-13) to one unearned run in the first inning. Jones improved to 9-3 overall, 6-0 in conference.
Rocky Biddle (4-4) will face Jason Davis (3-2) in the second game of the series at 1 p.m. today.
