Hicks’ Columns Make Fine Points

Share

Re “For Church, Moving to Car Lot Is a Big Deal,” April 18: I want to thank columnist Jerry Hicks for recognizing our under-construction Sanctuary and Activity Center as a “grand structure” that could be included among the “beautiful churches” in our county.

But I also want to affirm his observation that “you don’t need steeples and high ceilings to feel religion.” Church buildings, whether aesthetically stunning or blandly functional, are simply tools for ministry, places in which what really matters can happen, and from which the love of Christ can spread.

Clearly the Main Place Christian Fellowship has its heart in the right place, no matter what its location. I pray that Irvine Presbyterian Church, and other churches blessed with beautiful buildings, would have the same heart for God and for people that the Main Place church so wonderfully demonstrates.

* Jerry Hicks’ April 16 column, “Wishing a Family Some Peace on a Most Unsettling Day,” was outstanding!

His telling account of the dignity and courage of Gary and Collene Campbell and the terrible losses they suffered as crime victims demonstrated great compassion for the plight of crime victims everywhere. Both he and the Los Angeles Times can take much pride in a job well done.
