8-7 Defeat Gets Canyons Sacked From State Playoffs

Ryan Annett doubled home Bobby Platt with one out in the eighth inning for the eventual game-winning run Saturday as Mt. San Antonio defeated College of the Canyons, 8-7, eliminating the host Cougars from the Southern California regional playoffs.
In the first round of the State playoffs, Mt. SAC (27-18) won the first two games in the three-game series.
Mike Oliver and Lou Sanchez each had three-run home runs for Canyons (25-19), which had an 8-5 lead after six innings.
Tim Gutierrez hit a two-run home run in the seventh for Mt. SAC to cut the lead to 8-7.
Brian Baker (5-2) relieved Nate Celusta in the eighth inning and took the loss.
Saddleback 12, Pierce 7--The Brahmas (28-14) fell victim to a five-run seventh inning as host Saddleback (28-13) eliminated Pierce from the Southern California regional playoffs.
Rick Staves (2-1), who took the loss, faced three batters in the seventh without recording an out. Staves gave up three runs and left the game trailing, 7-6.
Casey Cote had three hits and two runs batted in for Pierce, and Mike Glendenning had his 60th RBI of the season with a single in the ninth.
MEN’S TENNIS
Pepperdine 4, Nevada Las Vegas 3--The eighth-ranked Waves overcame deficits of 2-1 and 3-2 to win the championship match of the NCAA Region VIII tournament in Las Vegas. Pepperdine (21-6) got victories from Chris Hill, Troy Budgen, Brad Sceney and Masahide Sakamoto at Nos. 3-6 singles and Michael Jessup and Hill at No. 3 doubles.
Hill won the final and deciding match of the five-hour showdown against the No. 29 Rebels (17-8). Hill defeated Tom Blenkiron, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5).
WOMEN’S SOFTBALL
San Diego State 5-2, CS Northridge 4-3--Pitcher Tara Glaister helped the Matadors salvage a split in a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader in San Diego by shutting out the Aztecs in the final four innings of the second game, which went nine innings. Glaister (21-7) pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits.
San Diego State (27-30, 12-16) won the opener by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh off Matador starter Jennifer Richardson (21-7). Aztec catcher Jamie Clark had a two-run single in the inning.
Northridge is 42-14, 21-7.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Righetti d. Providence, 13-15, 15-12, 13-15, 15-3, 15-1--Jose Tano had 23 kills and Bobby Chalermsopone added 11 kills and 32 assists for Providence (18-1), but unseeded Righetti (6-7) upset the sixth-seeded Pioneers (18-1) in a first-round match of the Southern Section Division III playoffs.
GIRLS’ SOFTBALL
Cornerstone Christian 10, Cate 0--Jen Feistel (12-1) pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight for the Eagles (16-2, 4-0) in a Condor League game.
Alemany 6, Flintridge Sacred Heart 0--Kim Diener pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven as the Indians (19-4, 9-1) clinched their sixth consecutive Mission League title. Tiffany Thompson had three hits and drove in two runs.
