Activists Plan Fund-Raiser to Help Pay for Street Repairs

Share

Residents of Pacific Palisades have decided that if the city isn’t going to pay for it, they might as well do it themselves.

An activist group called Palisades Pride has tried unsuccessfully for the last two years to convince Los Angeles officials to pay for repairs on sidewalks in Palisades Village. The sidewalks have been buckled by roots and pedestrians have tripped and fallen, said Jody Fine, a Palisades resident who is on the board of directors of Palisades Pride.

She says the city responded by paving over the broken pavement instead of fixing the problem. So Palisades Pride has taken matters into its own hands with its biggest fund-raising event: a June 3 golf tournament at the Riviera Country Club. Members of the group hope to raise enough money to start repair work in August.

In addition to the repairs, the project will include benches, light posts and plaques engraved with the names of donors.

“You can sit back and say that the city should do it, but what are we going to do--sit here and wait for the town to fall apart?” Fine asked. “We have a nice community and I think we should keep it that way.”. . .

REWARD: A reward fund has been set up to help the Los Angeles Department of Animal Regulation find the person who hanged a dog in West Los Angeles.

The 6-month-old German Shepherd mixed breed was found hanging from a tree earlier this month with a bag over its head and its hind legs bound together. The owner of the dog had received a note from someone before the dog was killed threatening to harm the animal if it did not stop barking.

Anyone with information about the hanging can call WeTip at (800) 78 CRIME. People interested in donating money to the reward fund should call Last Chance for Animals at (310) 271-6096.
