Kevin Kim and Joseph Gilbert, who won two Southern Section team tennis titles while playing for Sunny Hills, have made their college choices, with Kim deciding to play at UCLA and Gilbert headed for Boise State.

Kim, the nation’s top-ranked player as a 16-year-old and a member of the U.S. Tennis Assn.’s national team, has attended Palmer Tennis Academy in Tampa, Fla., the last two years. Although he has not signed a letter of intent with UCLA, Kim picked the Bruins over Miami and USC.

Kim’s father, Andrew Kim, said his son was close to signing with Miami, but he had a positive recruiting trip to UCLA and was excited about the prospects of working privately with Rolling Hills Estates’ Robert Lansdorp, who has coached Pete Sampras and Tracy Austin, among others.

“[UCLA tennis Coach] Billy Martin was quite supportive of Kevin working with a private coach while at UCLA,” Andrew Kim said. “Lansdorp was the clincher.”

Kim is with the USTA in Belgium with Newport Harbor’s Geoff Abrams, who recently signed a letter of intent with Stanford. From there, he will go to France for the junior French Open before returning to Palmer for final exams and graduation.

“With high school graduation coming, everybody is going away for college and Kevin is coming home,” Andrew Kim said. “That’s what we’re so happy about.

Gilbert, who took independent study this year and is living in Sacramento, signed a letter of intent with Boise State last month. He also considered Washington, Fresno State, Miami and UC Irvine but chose Boise State, which is coached by former UCI tennis Coach Greg Patton.

“Boise State was the best trip I had,” Gilbert said. “I liked the team and Greg seemed like a very good coach. Everybody I talked to had nothing but good things to say. He’s had successful teams before and he’s had a lot of good players.”

Gilbert said he will start school in January and play for the team in the spring season.
