JETHAWKS REPORT : Crandall Says He’s Near-Sighted

San Bernardino Stampede Manager Del Crandall, who picked the reserves for the California League all-star team, said he did not pick Modesto A’s standout Ben Grieve because he wanted Eddie Davis, from his own team, instead.

“That’s the most powerful reason,” Crandall said before the Stampede’s game at the Hangar on Friday. “[Davis] had been right up there in RBIs and he had played very well for us.”

Entering play Friday, Davis was hitting .267 with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs and Grieve was hitting .346 with eight home runs and 43 RBIs.

The JetHawks will face three left-handed starting pitchers in this weekend’s series against San Bernardino, a concern for Manager Dave Brundage because three of the JetHawks’ leaders in runs batted in are left-handed. The other is a switch-hitter. . . . Shortstop Luis Molina’s surgery Thursday on his left knee was successful. “It went great, better than expected,” JetHawk trainer Rob Nodine said. Molina will still be out nine months.
