Fight Gross Looking Like a Record
Promoter Bob Arum said Saturday that early indications are that the Oscar De La Hoya-Julio Cesar Chavez fight will gross more than the record $68 million brought in by the Sugar Ray Leonard-Marvelous Marvin Hagler bout in 1987 but less than the optimum $75 million.
“We sold out in California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas and New Mexico, and did nicely in Washington and Oregon,” Arum said, “but it fell off as you go East. That’s why I don’t think we’ll hit $75 million.”
Arum estimated 400,000 to 500,000 people in California saw the closed-circuit telecast, and said there were 18,000 at the Rose Bowl and 12,000 at the Coliseum.
He said the Coliseum was added late last week but not advertised. People showing up at sold-out locations were advised to try the Coliseum.
Arum said a replay of the fight will be shown Saturday on HBO, after the 6:30 card featuring Roy Jones Jr. against Eric Lucas.
