Missing two starters, the U.S. women’s volleyball team lost to Cuba, 15-11, 15-8, 8-15, 15-13, in the final day of pool play in the BCV Volley Cup in Montreux, Switzerland.

Team USA, the second-place team in Pool A with a 2-1 record, advances to the semifinal round to face Pool B champion Brazil (3-0), a straight-set winner over China (2-1) on Friday. Cuba, which won Pool A by defeating the Americans, faces Pool B runner-up China (2-1) in today’s other semifinal.

Outside hitter Tara Cross-Battle of Long Beach had another solid outing with a team-high 15 kills and four aces, as well as three blocks. Reserve middle blocker Danielle Scott played well in relief of Irvine’s Elaina Oden, who was given a day off by Coach Terry Liskevych because of the unusually hot and humid weather.
