Man on Tracks Struck, Killed by Freight Train
An unidentified man was struck and killed Wednesday night by a freight train, authorities said.
The man, described as a male transient by the train’s engineer, was sitting on the Metrolink tracks beneath the Camino Las Ramblas overpass south of the Hilton Suites Hotel when he was struck at 9:30 p.m., according to Lt. Lynn Nehring of the Orange County’s Sheriff’s Department.
“Before they could do anything, they just hit him,” Nehring said.
The man was decapitated by the impact of the Burlington Santa Fe freight train. It wasn’t immediately known how fast the train was going.
Last year, a 70-year-old San Clemente woman was hit and killed by a southbound train near Palisades Drive in the Capistrano Beach area of Dana Point.
