Friends and family of a 9-year-old boy who died when he was hit by a car on his way to school gathered Friday morning at the accident site in Jefferson Park to mourn the child’s death and plead for motorists to slow down.

Jason Quarker had just stepped off the curb to walk across Jefferson Boulevard at 6th Avenue with the help of a crossing guard Wednesday morning when he was hit by a 64-year-old motorist, police said.

The woman, whose name has not been released, allegedly drove around the cars waiting to let a group of children pass and hit Jason, according to Councilman Nate Holden, who organized the gathering.

“I just want everybody to be more careful,” Annette Tolson, Jason’s mother, said as she held a portrait of the boy. “They should get [a] stoplight and lower the speed limit.”

Holden promised the mourners that he would look into ways of getting motorists to slow down.
